Summary
Xenon 2: Megablast on the Game Boy drops you into a tight, vertically‑scrolling shoot‑em‑up where you pilot the little Megablaster. The ship can zip in any direction, but its real charm is the shield that absorbs hits until it finally gives out, forcing you to watch your restart points carefully. If you’re clever, you can even pull back on the D‑pad at the bottom of the screen to momentarily reverse the scroll and dodge a sudden swarm.
Each stage hides capsules that burst into tokens – some boost your firepower or speed, others refill the shield or let you dive into the background for a brief escape. The cash you collect from wrecked foes, called Real Cash, can be traded twice per level at Crispin’s Swop Shop for those upgrades, adding a light‑hearted economy to the frantic action.
Bosses bookend every level, with an extra midway foe on four of them, demanding a specific strategy to defuse the level’s bomb. The game even supports intermittent two‑player play, though it’s primarily a solo experience.
The Bitmap Brothers’ design shines through the gritty graphics, while David Whittaker’s remix of Bomb the Bass’s “Megablast (Hip Hop on Precinct 13)” gives the handheld a surprisingly punchy soundtrack. Nintendo Power praised the upgrade system and the all‑sides enemy pressure, but noted the ship feels a bit sluggish and the lack of auto‑fire can be a patience‑tester.
Storyline
Xenon 2: Megablast, often just called Xenon 2, is the sequel to the original Xenon and is set a thousand years after its predecessor. In this vertically scrolling shoot‑‘em‑up the player pilots a starship on a mission to destroy five time‑spanning bombs left by the vengeful Xenites.
The game’s five levels travel from the Cambrian era to futuristic metallic spaceways, each ending with a bomb that radiates mutating energy. Aggressive lifeforms, twisted by that radiation, populate the stages, providing the main obstacles for the player.
