Summary
The Game Boy version of World Heroes 2 Jet brings the arcade fighter to a handheld for the first time, reprogrammed by Betop and released by Takara in Japan as Nettō World Heroes 2 Jet before hitting North America via Playmates Interactive. Super Game Boy support adds a splash of color, while the tiny screen forces the cast into super‑deformed sprites that still manage to look surprisingly lively. All of the original roster makes the cut, and the core three‑button layout (punch, kick, throw/taunt) feels as snappy as it does on the arcade cabinet.
Beyond the familiar moves, the port introduces forward and backward dashing and a rebound mechanic when attacks clash, giving fights a brisk, kinetic feel even on the Game Boy’s modest hardware. Two brand‑new modes replace the older “Normal Game” and “Death Match”: “Entry to the tournament,” a step‑by‑step gauntlet against groups of opponents, and “The FORGING OF WARRIORS,” a single‑player ladder that doubles as the only two‑player option. In the latter, each victory advances you to the next challenger, and after four straight wins the match ends.
Critics responded positively, with Electronic Gaming Monthly rating it 7.875/10 and Famitsu 24/40. Reviewers praised the faithful character lineup, the surprisingly attractive graphics, and the tight controls, though they noted the sound channel was a weak spot for the portable version.
Storyline
After the defeat of Dio and Neo Geegus at the end of World Heroes 2, the world was saved and the fourteen fighters returned to their own time periods. A year later, each combatant receives an invitation to a new competition called the World Heroes Battle Fest, a five‑day tournament that will travel to different locations around the globe and be watched by millions. In the Game Boy version, World Heroes 2 Jet reveals that the sponsor isn’t Dr. Brown but a mysterious millionaire known only as Mr. Z. He is backed by two loyal servants and harbors a ruthless ambition for world domination, vowing to eliminate anyone who dares to stand in his way.
