Summary

Wave Race on the Game Boy lets you hop on a Personal Water Craft and tear through sixteen tracks split between two distinct modes. In Slalom you weave through paired posts, racking up points for each gate you clear, while Race challenges you to hit checkpoints and beat the clock, all while dodging buoys, pylons, shallow water and even whirlpools. You start with the nimble 550cc jet ski, graduate to the speedy 650cc, and can finally unleash the raw power of the 800cc National Class racer, with a limited turbo boost to shave off precious seconds.

The game spices things up with two on‑track power‑ups: a dolphin that sharpens your turning and an octopus that lets you steal points from rivals. Up to four friends can join the fun via the Game Boy link cable, turning the handheld into a mini‑arcade where the spray‑filled chaos feels surprisingly authentic. Critics praised the tight, realistic controls and the satisfying skidding feel, but many lamented the flickering graphics, repetitive scenery and occasional collision quirks.

Despite its visual shortcomings, Wave Race earned a spot in Nintendo’s Player’s Choice line and laid the groundwork for later console entries like Wave Race 64 and Blue Storm, proving that a simple handheld can still deliver a splashy racing experience.
