Summary
Undercover Cops: Hakaishin Garumaa, often called Undercover Cops Gaiden, takes the chaotic beat‑'em‑up vibe of the arcade original and turns it into a board‑game‑style, turn‑based adventure on the Game Boy. You pick one of three cops—Zan, Matt, or Rosa—and then hop around a grid of squares that behave like a mix of Monopoly and a casino, choosing between a "SLOT" roll or an "ITEM" action each turn. The slot mechanic can boost your movement range, but it also adds a gamble: a high number might be lowered by the machine, forcing you to think twice before committing.
Landing on black, giant‑man, or stick‑figure squares throws you into battles that revolve around picking numbers and targeting body parts. In "ATTACK" mode you select an enemy limb and a number; the higher you go, the more likely you land a hit. "DEFENSE" lets you guard specific parts, while "ITEM" and "SPECIAL" (SP) give you extra firepower at the cost of health. Running away is a risky but sometimes necessary escape.
The map is peppered with shops, inns, and even a 777 casino tile that lets you wager for extra cash. Each victory nets money and experience, but a single loss ends the game, making every decision feel weighty despite the handheld’s modest graphics.
