Summary
Tetris Plus landed in arcades in 1995 under Jaleco’s banner, then quickly migrated to home consoles the following year, appearing on the Sega Saturn, PlayStation and Game Boy. The U.S. release came after Jaleco struck a deal with Blue Planet Software, granting them exclusive U.S. rights to publish Tetris titles on those platforms for two years, and the PlayStation version even earned a spot in the budget‑friendly Greatest Hits line‑up. The game offers a straightforward Classic mode alongside a Puzzle mode that tasks you with clearing preset layouts before time runs out, plus an editor for crafting your own challenges and a two‑player Versus twist that pits friends against each other in a race to the finish. Critics were split: while some dismissed the Saturn port as a "feeble attempt" and "nothing to get excited about," others praised its value for casual fans, and scores ranged from a low 1.5/5 at AllGame to a respectable 78% in Sega Saturn Magazine.
Storyline
The biggest addition to Tetris Plus is the Puzzle Mode, which sends the player through five themed zones. The journey begins in Egypt, then proceeds to Angkor Wat, Maya, and Knossos, with Atlantis unlocked after the other four are cleared. Each zone contains its own set of 20 levels, giving the game a total of 100 stages.
At the start of every level a cluster of pre‑placed bricks appears and a professor character steps in through a disappearing gate, only to become trapped beneath a descending spiked ceiling. The professor walks back and forth, turning around when he hits a block, and can fall through gaps or climb up blocks placed on top of him.
The ceiling drops one notch roughly every eighteen seconds, shrinking the playable area, but clearing three or four rows at once pushes it back up. If the timer reaches 125 seconds the ceiling speeds up, and contact with it kills the professor, ending the level.
