Summary

Tetris Attack on Game Boy captures the same fast‑paced block‑matching thrill of its SNES counterpart, itself a western take on Japan’s Panel de Pon. I use the on‑screen cursor to swap adjacent colored gems, forming horizontal or vertical lines of three or more to clear them, while the stack rises from the bottom—miss the top and it’s game over. The cartridge packs a surprising variety: a Story Mode against computer rivals, endless and timed challenges, a Stage Clear that erases everything below a line, puzzle stages with set moves, plus local multiplayer that lets friends pit their chains against each other. GamePro in ’96 praised how it flips the classic Tetris idea, and gamers have long praised its bright sprites, addictive combos and competitive feel. The title even pops up as a cameo in later Nintendo goodies like Super Smash Bros., Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Captain Rainbow, cementing its legacy.

Storyline

Tetris Attack (known in Japan as Panel de Pon) drops players into the colorful world of Yoshi's Island. In the story mode, Bowser and his minions have cursed all of Yoshi’s friends, so you control Yoshi to clear each cursed friend and lift the spell. After freeing the friends, the challenge shifts to battling Bowser’s henchmen and finally Bowser himself, with the option to pick Yoshi or any of his rescued companions for the showdown. The original Japanese version featured fairy protagonists in a mythical fantasy setting, but the international release swaps those characters for Yoshi and his crew from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, keeping the puzzle‑action core intact.
