Summary

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue rounds out Konami’s Game Boy trilogy, arriving on the handheld just as the TMNT craze was still hot. The English version slipped into stores by the end of 1993, and the title was even spotlighted as a “Best of Show” pick at the 1994 Winter CES.

The game drops you into a sprawling, maze‑like world where you start as Michelangelo and, after freeing each brother, can switch among the four turtles. Each hero contributes a unique skill – Michelangelo’s aerial nunchaku hover, Leonardo’s ground‑piercing katana, Raphael’s shell‑shrink for tight passages, and Donatello’s wall‑climb – turning exploration into a clever puzzle. Life is topped up with pizza slices, extra hearts raise the maximum health, and key items such as ID cards unlock new routes. A world map and two continues help offset its reputation for relentless difficulty.

Critics at launch hailed the crisp sprites, catchy tunes, and tight controls, with Computer and Video Games awarding a 90/100. Later writers praised its pioneering Metroid‑vania design, noting that staff later helped shape Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The title resurfaced in the 2022 Cowabunga Collection, allowing a new generation to navigate its hidden corridors.

Storyline

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Radical Rescue drops you into a scrolling action‑adventure that feels like a cross between Metroid, The Goonies II and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. You start as Michelangelo, using his nunchaku to hover like a helicopter while you hunt down the kidnapped turtles, Master Splinter and April O'Neil.

Each brother brings a unique power needed to progress: Leonardo drills through floors with his katana, Raphael squeezes into tiny passages by curling into his shell, and Donatello clings to walls and climbs them. The game’s bosses include Scratch, Dirtbag, a Triceraton, Scale Tale and the final Cyber‑Shredder.

The plot opens a year after the Shredder’s defeat, with Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello watching TV when April’s broadcast about a prison break is cut off. The turtles race through Shredder’s base, rescue Splinter, discover April has also been taken, and finally defeat Shredder. April’s closing line promises peace now that the villain is gone.
