Summary

Super Robot Wars debuted on the Game Boy as the series’ inaugural entry, pulling together the iconic mechas of Universal Century Gundam, Mazinger and Getter Robo. Unlike later titles, it limits its cast to sentient robots, giving early fans a tidy, nostalgia‑rich roster. The game’s objective is surprisingly different: players must seize the enemy’s tower rather than simply defeat every opponent. The final showdown pits the heroic squad against Gilgilgan, the iconic villain from Great Mazinger vs. Getter Robo.

One of the few early installments to include a multiplayer mode, this version allowed friends to duel head‑to‑head before the series revisited the feature in Super Robot Wars XO. Spirit Commands—a powerful boost for units—are locked to the designated team ‘hero,’ adding a strategic layer to the otherwise straightforward combat. These quirks make the Game Boy edition a unique collector’s piece, showcasing how the franchise experimented before settling into the format most fans recognize today.

Storyline

Super Robot Taisen on the Game Boy pits the player against a roster of sentient mecha pulled from three iconic anime line‑ups. You’ll field units from the Universal Century Gundam saga, the classic Mazinger series and the legendary Getter Robo team, each piloted by their own AI personalities. The campaign builds toward a single showdown where the ultimate antagonist is Gilgilgan, the chief villain who originally clashed with Great Mazinger and Getter Robo in their own series. Defeating Gilgilgan ends the crossover war and restores peace among the mechanical heroes.
