Summary

Star Trek: The Next Generation drops you into a surprisingly deep spaceship simulation that captures the feel of the beloved TV series. Even though it launched across the NES, Game Boy, and Game Gear in the early ’90s, the handheld version manages to pack a full‑scale starship experience into a tiny screen.

GamePro noted that the Game Boy edition feels tougher than its NES counterpart, a consequence of the monochrome display and limited screen real‑estate. Still, Power Unlimited awarded the portable version an 80% score, praising its variety of missions, crisp graphics for the system, and challenging opponents – a must‑play for any Trekkie who can squeeze a warp drive into their pocket.

Storyline

In Star Trek: The Next Generation – Game Boy, players assume the role of Starfleet cadets inside a USS Enterprise‑D simulation. Taking Captain Jean‑Luc Picard’s seat, you tackle mission‑based objectives through a series of mini‑games that let you divert power to shields, manage Transporter systems, navigate, and handle tactical controls. Successful missions earn rank promotions, starting as an Ensign and climbing through Lieutenant, Lt. Commander, Commander, and finally Captain, each with its own password for resuming play. Combat scenarios pit you against foes of varying strength—Talarians are the weakest, renegade Klingons the toughest, while a single Borg cube appears in a later mission. Picard briefs each scenario, sending you to transport ambassadors, eliminate Ferengi pirates, and ultimately confront the Borg threat.
