Summary

Spud's Adventure is one of those ultra‑rare Game Boy gems that still pops up in collector circles. You play as Spud, a cap‑wearing potato, who must climb the mysterious Far Tower to rescue Princess Mato from the villainous Devi, and the whole thing feels like a quirky mash‑up of action and light RPG mechanics. As you blast enemies with Spud’s projectile gun you earn experience; every 100 points grants a level‑up and a boost to health, and rescued allies—like Arnie Eggplant with his long‑range boomerang—can be swapped in for their own special abilities. Each floor is a little puzzle box: mazes, hidden keys, reversed controls, sudden darkness, and occasional boss battles that hand you a password to continue. If you have two Game Boys and a link cable, the Versus mode lets four characters race up a chosen tower round, turning the rescue mission into a frantic multiplayer showdown.

Storyline

In the quirky Vegetable Kingdom, King Vegitan V—a proud tomato—announces it’s time for his daughter, Princess Mato, to find a husband, much to her embarrassment. Before any suitors appear, the demonic beetle Devi storms the castle, kidnaps the princess, and locks her away in his own stronghold. The king dispatches two knights, Arnie Eggplant and Gerrit Carrot, but they never return, prompting the lone wanderer Spud to volunteer for the rescue.

Spud’s quest leads him into Devi’s castle, where he frees both Arnie and Gerrit, who then join his cause. On the first floor he meets Terry Turnip, a friend of Arnie’s; after Arnie sacrifices himself to save Terry from falling rocks, Terry steps in as Spud’s new companion. A Japanese‑only scene shows Devi’s sister trying to dissuade him from attacking Spud.

The climax pits Spud against Devi, who reveals he serves a darker master named Dodorian. Dodorian slays Devi, but Spud defeats Dodorian as well, rescues Princess Mato, and returns her safely to King Vegitan. With his mission complete, Spud bids farewell and continues his wandering, while Princess Mato calls after him, deciding to join his journey as the game ends.
