Summary
Spud's Adventure is a curious mix of action and light RPG found on the original Game Boy, and it’s notorious for being one of the platform’s rarest releases. The hero is a cap‑sporting potato who leads an eclectic crew of vegetable warriors—Arnie Eggplant throws a boomerang, and each ally brings a distinct attack to the ever‑changing tower.
The game lets you level up simply: every 100 experience points awards a new level and extra health. Floors are a scramble of mazes, puzzles, and even occasional reverse‑control sections or blackout rooms, with hidden keys and power‑ups scattered throughout. Bosses block the way and trigger a password save, while the two‑player Versus Mode, using a link cable, lets friends fight the same tower and race to rescue the captive princess. Its quirky cast and unpredictable dungeon design keep the experience fresh, making it a quirky collector’s gem for retro enthusiasts.
Storyline
In the Vegetable Kingdom, King Vegitan V, a tomato, decides it’s time to find a husband for his daughter Princess Mato, who is embarrassed by the idea. While the royal plans unfold, the demonic beetle Devi storms the castle and kidnaps the princess, imprisoning her in his own stronghold. The king sends knights Arnie Eggplant and Gerrit Carrot to rescue her, but they never return, prompting the lone wanderer Spud to volunteer for the perilous quest. During his journey Spud frees Arnie and Gerrit, who join him, and meets Terry Turnip on the first floor; after Arnie sacrifices himself, Terry takes his place as a companion. In the final showdown Spud defeats Devi, learns that Devi served the master Dodorian, and then defeats Dodorian as well, rescuing Princess Mato and returning her to the grateful king. With his mission complete, Spud departs to keep wandering, while Mato calls after him, choosing to join his travels, ending Spud’s Adventure.
