Summary

In "Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge" (often just called Arcade's Revenge) you’re thrust into the twisted corridors of Murderworld, where Spider‑Man and the X‑Men must each clear two distinct events before the final showdown with Arcade. The first event for any hero is yours to pick, but the second stays locked until you finish the opening stage, and all characters share a single pool of lives – a loss on one hero hurts the whole team.
The game’s design was clearly riding the wave of the early‑90s X‑Men cartoon, and LJN seemed eager to cash in on the popularity of both the web‑slinger and mutant franchises. Critics at GamePro praised the sprite work but slammed the imprecise controls and the need to redo the same level‑one maze every time you restart, a gripe that followed the title onto the Game Gear as well.

Storyline

While swinging through New York, Spider‑Man notices that X‑Men Cyclops, Storm and Wolverine have vanished. He then spots a garbage‑truck tube pulling in Gambit and realizes the mastermind is Arcade, so he webs the truck and follows the trail. The chase leads him to an abandoned building, which serves as the first stage of the game. In this area the player, as Spider‑Man, must deactivate a series of "Security Eyes" in the exact order shown by his Spider‑Sense to gain entry. Once inside, Spider‑Man and the rescued X‑Men are forced into Murderworld, Arcade’s deadly simulated arena designed to torture and kill its victims.
