Summary

Spartan X on the Game Boy carries the punchy arcade spirit of its 1984 namesake while swapping its original Tokyo‑style backdrop for a quirky, portable twist. The game leans on the same martial‑film inspiration that fueled its arcade sibling—Jackie Chan’s slap‑dash energy and Bruce Lee’s lethal choreography—but it doesn’t retell the film‑derived plot. Instead, the handheld introduces a fresh hero called "Bruce Leap," a tongue‑in‑cheek nod to those cinematic heroes, letting players dart through side‑scrolling beats and occasional gun‑play without the narrative baggage. Masato Ishizaki’s chip‑tune soundtrack rounds out the experience, echoing the arcade’s adrenaline in a format that feels snug enough for a commuter’s palm. In short, the Game Boy version preserves the frenetic combat rhythm while gifting Western gamers a brand‑new protagonist and a portable soundtrack that still feels unmistakably 1980s retro.

Storyline

In Spartan X, you play as Thomas, a disciplined kung fu master in a plain white keikogi. One day he receives a cryptic note saying his girlfriend Sylvia has been taken into custody and that he must go to the Devil’s Temple. The letter warns that five sons of the Devil await him.

Thomas rushes to the pagoda, battling through five distinct floors of the temple. Each floor is filled with thugs that he can punch, kick, or toss off the edge. At the end of every level a boss—culminating in the crime lord known only as Mr. X—appears, turning the action into a one‑on‑one duel.

Both Thomas and his opponents have health meters, so fights play out like a classic beat‑‘em‑up with strategic timing. The structure mirrors the movie Game of Death, with the hero climbing higher after each victory. The goal is to defeat all five guardians and rescue Sylvia.
