Summary
Side Pocket on the Game Boy feels like a pocket‑billiards mini‑arcade that had to shrink to fit the handheld’s tiny screen. The playing field is noticeably smaller, the physics are a touch simpler, and the layout is rearranged with a fresh chiptune soundtrack that sets it apart from the NES port.
The core "Pocket Game" mode still runs on four levels, and you begin with five lives. You rack up points by sinking balls, especially when you string together consecutive pots or follow the numerical order, and a flashing star that occasionally lights up a pocket can hand you extra points, a spare life, or even a bonus round if you hit it just right.
What really makes the Game Boy version stand out is the single‑player nine‑ball mode, presented as a practice stage. Unlike other ports where nine‑ball is strictly a two‑player affair, here you can hone your skills solo, with three lives that are restored after a successful shot.
The game also throws in trick‑shot challenges, letting you try to pocket all balls in one go, and you can apply left or right english, masse, or even jump shots to pull off the more flamboyant plays.
