Summary
Tail 'Gator (known in Japan as Shippo de Bun!) drops you into the scaly shoes of Charly, a tiny alligator who attacks by whipping his tail forward. The core loop is simple yet addictive: clear rooms, smash treasure chests, and collect the key that unlocks the next stage.
The game is split into five distinct areas. The first three are each broken into four themed sections—Air, Land, Cave, and Underwater—while the final two focus on Basso Gila’s castle. Every section contains four levels (the fourth and fifth areas only have three), and hidden doors in certain sections reveal secret levels once you’ve snagged the key. Treasure chests dispense a random mix of power-ups, from health‑boosting Hearts to the bomb that wipes the screen clean.
Power‑ups also fuel Charly’s special tail meter, turning his swipe into a short‑range projectile when fully charged. Boss battles pepper each area: a leaping frog in the Cave, a bubble‑blowing fish underwater, a projectile‑spitting bird in the Air, a rock‑club‑wielding otter on land, and finally the stationary fire‑ball‑throwing Basso Gila in his castle. All of this combines into a quirky, challenging platformer that still feels fresh for anyone who loves retro handheld action.
Storyline
Shippo de Bun (Game Boy) centers on a sudden invasion that throws the tranquil animal kingdom of Moberry into chaos. A dragon warlord named Basso Gila teleports his castle and army straight into Moberry, intent on crushing the realm and claiming ultimate rule. The kingdom’s council of elders, desperate to protect their people, appoints Charly—a highland alligator—to repel the invaders. Charly’s mission is to drive Basso Gila’s forces out and restore freedom to Moberry. The story unfolds as the unlikely hero battles through the warped castle and its dragon‑led troops.
