Summary
The Game Boy version of Shaq‑Fu brings the same seven‑fighter roster from the SNES title onto a tiny handheld screen, letting players control Shaquille O’Neal and his eclectic opponents in a portable format. Because of the hardware limits, the cartridge drops the tournament mode and any in‑game voice work, turning the experience into a stripped‑down brawler. Critics at the time, especially GamePro, noted that the graphics were reduced to the point where the characters became almost unrecognizable and the music turned into an overly aggressive backdrop that drowned out the action. While the game received mixed reactions on release, it quickly earned a reputation as one of the most poorly received titles in the era, often cited in lists of the worst video games ever made. Its legacy lives on as a quirky footnote in the story of a basketball star whose love of martial arts inspired a surprisingly odd crossover.
Storyline
In Shaq-Fu (Game Boy), Shaquille O'Neal is on his way to a charity basketball game in Tokyo when he wanders into a mysterious dojo. He meets martial‑arts master Leotsu, who mistakenly believes Shaq is the prophesied warrior chosen by the Stars, and sends him through a portal to the “Second World.” There, Shaq must rescue a young boy named Nezu from the evil mummy Sett‑Ra and battle the mummy’s minions. After defeating Sett‑Ra and freeing Nezu, Shaq returns to his own world just in time for the basketball match, only to discover that Beast, one of Sett‑Ra’s minions, has followed him and joined the opposing team, demanding a rematch.
