Summary

I first stumbled upon The Sword of Hope – known in Japan as Selection: Erabareshi Mono – when Kemco bundled it with its sequel as Selection I & II for the Game Boy in 1998. The collection felt like a time‑capsule, preserving the original 1989‑era RPG mechanics while giving new players a chance to explore both adventures on a single cartridge. What really hooked me was the way each boss carried a distinct weakness, turning battles into puzzles where the right strategy mattered more than raw stats. The game rewards experimentation: discover the hidden flaw, exploit it, and watch a once‑formidable foe crumble. Even after two decades, that blend of strategic combat and nostalgic pixel art still makes the Selection series stand out among handheld classics.

Storyline

In the Game Boy title *The Selection* (often referred to simply as *Selection I & II*), you step into the boots of Prince Theo. His father, King Hennessy, has fallen under the sway of a malevolent dragon, turning the kingdom into a slave state and banishing the wise men who once kept the realm balanced. Theo’s mother, Queen Remy, was slain by Hennessy, but an old sage rescued the young prince from the castle unharmed. Now a teenage warrior, Theo returns to the stronghold of his upbringing, ready to confront the dragon’s grip and free his father from its dark influence. The story drives the player’s quest to restore the kingdom’s lost harmony.
