Summary

Sagaia, the Game Boy incarnation of Darius II, debuted in 1991 as a Japan‑only handheld original. It pulls familiar bits from the first two Darius titles while delivering brand‑new stages, all rendered in the system's classic monochrome palette where power‑up icons are distinguished by shapes rather than colour.

The shoot‑'em‑up is strictly single‑player, omitting formation bonuses and the usual level‑select screen; instead, the ending changes three ways depending on the difficulty you finish on. Set in the inner half of the Solar System, the game branches like its arcade ancestor and offers a spectrum of upgrades: red, green and blue power‑ups enhance missiles, bombs and shields; a yellow adds a laser; a rainbow boosts every weapon. Mini‑bosses, dubbed “captains,” are scaled‑down versions of the original Darius foes, adding a nostalgic twist for veteran fans.

Storyline

Sagaia (the Game Boy version of Darius II) picks up the story after the original Darius. The colonized world of Darius is healing from the Belser Army’s invasion thanks to heroes Proco and Tiat. Survivors have moved to the neighboring planet Olga while reconstruction continues on Darius.

From Olga’s space‑flight headquarters the crew intercepts an SOS broadcast from Earth, the colonists’ original home. The message describes alien vessels that closely resemble the Belser ships. Believing the signal may come from their long‑lost ancestors, the people of Darius dispatch Proco Jr. and Tiat Young to investigate.
