Summary

Riddick Bowe Boxing feels like a portable version of the classic heavyweight titles I loved on consoles. The game uses 2‑D sprite boxers in a simple ring, and each fighter tracks power, stamina and speed – Bowe himself tops the chart, though his stats dip once he loses the championship and he eventually retires, forcing a reset to bring him back. In career mode you create a boxer, choosing name, hair and skin colour, then fight through a ladder of opponents; after 35 bouts your hair turns grey, and at 40 fights the game forces retirement, even if you’ve never beaten the champ. Losing two matches in a row also ends the run. Health meters drop with each hit, and three knock‑downs in a round trigger a TKO; otherwise the bout runs to the round limit, ignoring real‑world stoppages. The exhibition mode lets you pit any boxer against any other, which is handy for quick bouts. Reviews were mixed: the SNES version earned a 7.2 from EGM for its easy punches and dream‑like controls, while GamePro slammed the Game Gear port for sluggish button response and thin sound, noting that the Spanish‑only Chavez version suffered from the same rudimentary graphics and audio.
