Summary

Radar Mission stands out as one of the very first Game Boy experiences, and it even broke new ground by being the handheld’s inaugural military‑themed title. Released by Nintendo in 1990 for both Japan and North America, the game’s simple yet tense radar‑tracking gameplay feels like a tiny slice of Cold War intrigue squeezed onto a tiny screen. I love how the minimalist graphics and beeping alerts create a surprisingly immersive atmosphere, especially considering the hardware limits of the original Game Boy.

More than two decades later, the title resurfaced as a launch offering for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in 2011, giving a new generation a chance to flick the switch and hear those iconic radar pings again. It’s a neat reminder of how Nintendo’s early handheld experiments still echo in today’s portable gaming world.
