Summary
Prophecy: The Viking Child—often shortened to Viking Child—delivers a vibrant side‑scrolling romp starring a sprightly Viking youngster wielding a trusty axe. The game throws you into sixteen sprawling stages that wander from stone‑capped castles to snow‑laden peaks. Every level bristles with hidden gold, weapon upgrades and an array of mischievous foes. Strategically placed shops let you purchase potions and magical trinkets to shore up your dwindling health, while a password system lets you resume progress without any built‑in save slots. The design feels heavily inspired by classic titles like Wonder Boy in Monster Land, especially the loop of collecting treasure, improving gear and visiting merchants. Bright, cartoonish graphics keep the atmosphere light even during boss encounters, and a soundtrack of twenty‑two upbeat tunes underscores the action. The final hurdle is the daunting Dark Lord Loki and his eight Apprentices of Darkness. Although the game arrived on several home computers, the Game Boy version remains a standout for its tight controls and faithful adaptation. Cancelled ports to the Game Gear, Master System and Commodore 64 have only added to its collector‑friendly mystique.
Storyline
Prophecy: The Viking Child follows the young Viking Brian on a mythic quest. He is summoned to the Halls of Valhalla, where ancient spirits test his courage. The game’s core narrative pits Brian against the trickster god Loki and the dark minions that serve him.
Throughout the adventure, Brian must navigate rune‑etched corridors, solve simple puzzles, and engage in side‑scroll combat typical of Game Boy action titles. Each victory brings him closer to confronting Loki’s ultimate scheme, while the backdrop of Norse legend adds a rich, atmospheric flavor to the handheld experience.
