Summary
Probotector 2 is the European Game Boy rebrand of Contra: The Alien Wars, where the classic green‑squadron heroes are swapped for cartoonish bots and even the enemy sprites get a metallic makeover. Aside from the visual overhaul the level design mirrors the SNES original, but a few quirks set it apart: a boss in the Mode 7 stage was completely redesigned, the handy weapon‑swap screen disappears, and the signature spinning melee attack never appears.
Playing the cartridge on a Super Game Boy unlocks a splash of colour and a richer audio mix, making the handheld experience feel surprisingly lively. These subtle changes keep the game fresh for fans familiar with the console version while preserving the frantic run‑and‑gun core that defined the series.
Storyline
Probotector 2 on the Game Boy drops you into a frantic battle against an alien invasion of Earth. Across six distinct stages you must clear hostile terrain, defeat extraterrestrial forces and prevent the planet’s takeover. In PAL territories the game was released under the name Super Probotector: Alien Rebels, a change forced by German regulations that barred violent titles for minors. To comply, the human protagonists were swapped for robot heroes designated RD‑008 and RC‑011, turning the cast into mechanical fighters. The gameplay remains fast‑paced, with each stage escalating the alien threat and demanding quick reflexes.
