Summary

The Game Boy version of Prince of Persia brings the classic sword‑and‑acrobatic adventure to a handheld format without sacrificing the fluid motion that made the original famous. Mechner’s original rotoscoped animation—hand‑drawn from his brother’s movements—translates surprisingly well to the tiny monochrome screen, letting the Prince flip, climb and duel with a smoothness rare for a 1990s portable title.

Because the original game was ported to more platforms than almost any other title, the handheld release feels like a natural extension of its wide legacy. Even with limited colors and a modest control layout, the cartridge preserves the puzzle‑platform core that fans loved, proving that the Prince’s escape from the palace walls can be just as tense in a pocket.

Storyline

The Game Boy version of Prince of Persia keeps the core premise – you have one hour to reach the palace and defeat the evil Jaffar.

The platformer is presented in a 2.5‑D side‑scrolling style, with the same deadly traps and guard battles that defined the original.

Unlike the earlier titles, the handheld adventure weaves a new narrative that jumps between the 9th‑ and 13th‑century timelines, following two princes.

The primary hero is Sargon, a member of the Immortals, who must navigate the shifting eras to stop Jaffar’s plot.

The game’s story also inspired later media, including the Prince of Persia film starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan.
