Summary
When I first dug out my old Game Boy, I was surprised to see *Primal Rage* tucked among the cartridges—a miniature version of the arcade brawler I remembered. The handheld strips down the roster to six beasts, leaving out the snake‑like goddess Vertigo, and each creature’s move list is noticeably trimmed, yet the core three‑move strategy stays intact. Probe Software’s port shines surprisingly in the monochrome screen: the graphics are crisp for a portable, and, as *GamePro* noted, there’s no slowdown even during the chaotic finishing moves.
Even with the visual downgrade, the spirit of the original shines through; you still toss wandering tribespeople for a health boost, and the odd “human volleyball” Easter egg remains hidden if you dig deep. The controls feel counter‑intuitive at first—holding buttons then moving the D‑pad—mirroring the arcade’s quirky input method. Overall, this handheld version captures the raw fun of battling prehistoric gods in a pocket‑sized package.
Storyline
In Primal Rage for the Game Boy, a cataclysmic meteor strike wipes out modern civilization and reshapes the planet into a primordial rainforest‑covered world called “Urth.” Survivors regress into Stone Age tribes, living under the shadow of seven colossal, super‑powered beasts that have awakened from deep within the planet’s crust. These creatures are worshipped as gods, and each tribe aligns itself with a specific monster, forming isolated clans. The beasts themselves are split between those who seek to preserve the fragile peace of Urth and those driven by chaos and personal gain. The conflict between the divine beasts and their human followers fuels the game’s brutal, elemental battles.
