Summary
Pit‑Fighter’s most striking feature is its use of real‑life actors filmed against a bluescreen, so every punch and kick you see is a short replay of actual footage rather than a hand‑drawn sprite. The result feels oddly cinematic for a 1990s arcade fighter, and the same visual gimmick made its way onto the Game Boy in a 1992 handheld port.
You start by picking one of three fighters, each with a distinct blend of speed, power and move‑set. The controls are simple: three buttons let you punch, kick, or slam a "super move" when you press them all together. Matches are short but brutal, and the arena is peppered with 15 different bouts that keep the action fresh.
Up to three people can join the fray, and every third round turns into a "Grudge Match" where you face a clone of yourself or the other players. Getting knocked down three times eliminates you from that round, while the last fighter standing earns extra cash. The crowd isn’t just cheering – they can toss weapons, shove combatants, or even attack, and a fleeting "power pill" boost makes you temporarily tougher and less vulnerable.
The Game Boy version captures all of this chaos in a portable package, letting you trade blows on the go while still feeling the gritty, digitized atmosphere of the original arcade experience.
Storyline
Pit-Fighter lets you choose from three distinct combatants: Buzz, an all‑American ex‑pro wrestler built like a tank; Ty, an agile Afro‑Asian‑American kickboxing champion; and Kato, a quick‑moving Japanese‑American third‑degree black belt. Along the way you face eight named opponents—Executioner, Southside Jim, Angel, C.C. Rider, Mad Miles, Heavy Metal, Chainman Eddie and the mysterious Masked Warrior—plus a handful of background characters such as Knife Woman and the Big Kid in the Crowd. The climax is the Championship Match, a showdown against the Masked Warrior, who taunts you between bouts. In multiplayer mode, any players still alive must battle each other to the death until only one remains to challenge the Masked Warrior.
