Summary
Penguin Wars (known as King of the Zoo in Europe) started as a quirky arcade dodge‑ball‑style showdown where you control a penguin against a bear, panda, koala and beaver. The Game Boy port flips the script, letting you pick from a cow, rabbit, bat, rat or the original penguin, each with its own speed‑and‑stun trade‑offs – the rat darts side‑to‑side while the cow lumbers but snaps back to consciousness faster.
The core of the match is simple yet frantic: ten balls sit on a square table, five on each side, and you must roll them all onto the opponent’s half before the 60‑second timer runs out. Getting hit knocks you out temporarily, so timing your attacks is as crucial as positioning your animal. After half a minute a jelly‑bean‑shaped obstacle slides across the middle, deflecting balls in unpredictable ways and adding a layer of chaos to each round.
A catchy electronic rendition of the 1980s J‑Pop tune “Motto Sekkin Shimasho” (a loose cover of Sheila E.’s “The Glamorous Life”) loops in the background, giving the game a distinctly retro vibe. Hamster Corporation now holds the rights, and the title lives on in modern Arcade Archives releases for Switch and PS4, proving that this oddball sport still has a place in today’s retro‑gaming scene.
