Summary
In Painter Momopie you step into the shoes of Momopie, a witch armed with a giant paintbrush, tasked with scrubbing the dirty tiles of a sprawling castle. Each of the 33 floors is laid out like a maze, and every tile you brush away reveals a clean path while lurking monsters wait to end your run.
As you progress, Momopie picks up spells—some earned by advancing, others handed down randomly by the King every few stages. These spells can stun or eliminate foes, or even turn them into temporary allies, but each use drains MP. The MP pool refills after every floor and gradually expands, letting you tackle tougher sections.
Critics were split when the game first appeared: Famitsu scored it 21 out of 40 and Germany’s Power Play gave it 47 out of 100. Modern retrospectives are kinder, with Hardcore Gaming 101 dubbing it a hidden gem on the Game Boy, though they note the lack of a save system and the reuse of levels toward the end.
