Summary
Nintendo World Cup, the Western flip of the Japanese "Nekketsu Koukou Soccer Bu: World Cup Hen," drops the usual Kunio‑kun humor onto a stripped‑down soccer pitch. Each squad fields only six players—goalkeeper, two defenders, a midfielder and two forwards—so the action stays frantic and every move feels decisive. There are no offsides or fouls to call, but repeated tackles can permanently knock a player out for the rest of the half, making body‑contact feel risky as it is rewarding.
The game adds flair with five team‑specific “super shots” you unleash by timing bicycle kicks, diving headers, or after a set number of steps. Play on ice, sand or dirt fields, each of which tweaks traction for both the ball and the players, and switch between a single‑player Tournament mode and a split‑screen VS Match for head‑to‑head mayhem. Multiplayer works over a link cable or the Four‑Player Adapter, keeping the chaos lively even on the tiny Game Boy screen.
Storyline
Nintendo World Cup pits thirteen national squads—Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, England, France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, Spain and the United States—against each other in a fast‑paced world‑cup tournament. Each team battles through a series of knockout matches, aiming to claim the top spot and be crowned world champions. The game’s arcade‑style soccer emphasizes quick reflexes and exaggerated moves, turning the classic tournament format into a frantic, over‑the‑top showdown.
