Summary

Mysterium drops you into the cramped, flickering corridors of the alchemist Hermetrix’s laboratory, where you’re not just a visitor but his newly‑hired apprentice. The game forces you to think like a chemist: you’ll gather stray metals and minerals and toss them into pools of mercury, water, fire, or acid, watching the reactions forge the tools you need to survive the three‑dimensional maze. Each hallway feels like a living experiment, and the first‑person view makes every clang of metal and hiss of acid feel immediate. Though it arrived on the Game Boy in early 1991, the title feels more like a portable lab than a typical handheld adventure, showcasing Maxis’s early knack for turning limited hardware into a sandbox of alchemical puzzles.
