Summary
The Game Boy edition of Mortal Kombat 3 brings the iconic fighter roster to a tiny screen, but trims it down to nine of the original fifteen combatants – Kano, Sonya, Sub‑Zero, Cyrax, Sektor, Sheeva, Sindel, Kabal and Smoke – plus five usable stages. While the arcade’s full‑scale mayhem is impossible to replicate, the handheld version still lets you unleash the signature Fatalities and Babalities that define the series.
Missing button‑link combos and most finishers force players to rely on basic attacks; Shao Kahn even reuses his moves from MK II, and Motaro disappears entirely. It remains the only Game Boy title awarded an M rating by the ESRB, keeping a few “burning” Fatalities despite toned‑down gore.
Critics praised the commercial success and the effort to condense MK3’s brutal style into a portable format, yet many lamented the absent popular fighters and the loss of newer mechanics like the Run meter and animal finishers.
Storyline
Mortal Kombat 3 storyline: Shao Kahn uses his Shadow Priests, led by Shang Tsung, to resurrect Queen Sindel in Earthrealm, letting him breach the dimension barrier and merge Earthrealm with Outworld, draining billions of souls. Raiden can only shield souls, so a few warriors must battle extermination squads to stop Kahn and restore humanity.
Liu Kang, fresh from defeating Kahn in Outworld, becomes the squads’ prime target and teams with Kung Lao to lead the rebellion, while secretly trying to free Edenia for Kitana. The Lin Kuei automate Cyrax, Sektor and Smoke; Smoke is captured and forced to hunt Sub‑Zero, who leaves the clan and joins the resistance. Jax rescues Sonya, unintentionally freeing Kano, who escapes to Outworld and sides with Kahn; Sonya and Jax return to warn Earth’s government and then join the fight.
Sheeva, Sindel’s bodyguard, doubts Kahn after the apparent deaths of Kintaro and Goro and readies to betray him. Kabal, seeking revenge on the Black Dragon, and Nightwolf, guilt‑ridden by ignored visions, both join the human offensive. Stryker, the lone New York survivor, receives a vision from Raiden and seeks the other warriors. Johnny Cage is killed by a Kahn squad, reportedly by Motaro.
