Summary

The Game Boy version of Missile Command arrived as a handheld twin to Asteroids, giving portable fans a taste of the arcade’s frantic defense. Accolade first shipped it in 1992, then Nintendo bundled it with the Asteroids port in the 1995 Arcade Classic double‑pack, while Hasbro Interactive gave the Game Boy Color its own spin in 1999. The core experience stays true to the original: you control three missile batteries, moving a crosshair across a star‑filled sky and firing anti‑ballistic missiles that explode into lingering fireballs, wiping out incoming warheads and occasional bombers. Each battery starts with ten shots, and the pressure ramps as missiles split and new threats like smart bombs appear. Scoring rewards unused missiles and cities, and every few levels a bonus city can replace a lost one, keeping the tension alive until the inevitable "The End."

Storyline

Missile Command’s instruction manual for the Atari 2600 frames the action as a war between two planets: Zardon, the defending side, and Krytol, the aggressor. The original arcade version never named any worlds, leaving the conflict to the player’s imagination. Early prototypes even used real Californian city names for the six defended locations, but those were stripped out to avoid naming either the attacking or defending state. Designer Dave Theurer insisted the game remain purely defensive, with no explicit references to any nation or region. Released in June 1980 amid the Cold War, the game’s radar‑screen aesthetic evokes missiles launched from the USSR toward the US, though the final product omits any direct mention. The closing screen simply reads "The End," a stark reminder that in the end there is no winner and war is futile.
