Summary
Metroid II: Return of Samus, often just called Metroid II, was the first handheld adventure to send Samus Aran down the dark corridors of SR388. Players roam a sprawling underground world, hunting a fixed quota of 47 Metroids that mutate through five evolutionary stages, while a detector beeps you toward the next target. The Game Boy’s limitations forced the team at Nintendo R&D1 to add the round‑shouldered Varia Suit, a design choice that stuck around forever.
New tools arrive as you progress: the Space Jump lets you spring high, the Spider Ball hugs walls and ceilings, the Spring Ball bounces you while in Morph form, and the Spazer and Plasma beams trade off power for style. A quake‑triggered drop in lava reveals deeper tunnels, and save modules—thanks to a battery‑backed cartridge—let you pause your quest. With 1.72 million units sold, it earned the Player’s Choice badge in ’93, cementing its place in Metroid lore.
Storyline
Metroid II: Return of Samus follows the Galactic Federation’s order for the bounty‑hunter to cleanse the Metroid homeworld SR‑388. After previous teams vanished, Samus descends into the planet’s caverns, confronting the creatures as they evolve from tiny jellyfish‑like forms into larger, hovering lizard‑like beasts and finally the massive Queen Metroid. She systematically exterminates each stage, culminating in the destruction of the Queen. While exiting the planet she discovers a lone Metroid egg; a hatchling breaks free, immediately imprinting on Samus as its mother. Refusing to kill the infant, Samus lets it aid her ascent, and together they board her ship and leave SR‑388.
