Summary

The Game Boy version of Metal Masters lets you start out with a simple robot and slowly outfit it with new parts as you rack up credits. Each upgrade—body, left arm, right arm or legs—has its own health gauge, so I’m constantly weighing whether a stronger punch or sturdier legs will give me the edge in a duel. The 2‑D arena feels cramped on the handheld, but the sprite work stays surprisingly bright and animated for the system. I found the two‑player mode the most satisfying; a friend’s robot can turn a single match into a genuine strategy session. The only gripe I share with older reviews is the robot‑step sound, which still feels a bit grating, and the sometimes lumbering movement that can slow the pace down. Still, it’s a charming slice of early ‘90s fighting that rewards tinkering and practice.

Storyline

Metal Masters pits you against the scheming Baron, who is scavenging robot components to build the ultimate machine. As the lone pilot, you must hunt down and smash the enemy robots before they can deliver their parts to the Baron’s workshop.
Each destroyed robot denies him a crucial piece, slowly unraveling his grand design. The game’s simple premise drives frantic action across varied stages, keeping the focus on relentless combat and the race to stop the Baron’s creation.
