Summary

Magic Knight Rayearth for the Game Boy draws directly from CLAMP’s popular anime and manga, letting fans relive the saga on a handheld screen. The North American version, brought over by Working Designs in 1998, kept the series’ spirit while adding the charm of a portable adventure. You command a party of three heroines—Hikaru with her sword, Umi wielding a foil, and Fū the archer—but only one fights at a time, swapping instantly to match the challenge. Each character’s weapon can be upgraded, and the bow even learns a lock‑on feature that homes in on the nearest foe, while gear and magic grow stronger after finding special items. After major plot beats the game adds journal entries for each girl, offering personal reflections that deepen the story beyond the basic quest.

Storyline

Magic Knight Rayearth on Game Boy follows the first story arc of the manga and anime almost verbatim, with a few game‑only twists. Eighth‑grade girls Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji are whisked away from a field trip at Tokyo Tower and thrust into the fantasy world of Cephiro. There, Master Mage Clef informs them they must become the Magic Knights and rescue the Pillar, Princess Emeraude (called Princess Emerald in the English version), from the high priest Zagato (Zagat in some translations). All characters from the original arc appear, plus the anime‑only Inouva, and the game adds new locations and extra foes. Players can read each girl’s journal for personal insights, and unlike the anime, every one of Zagato’s minions—including Ascot, Caldina and Rafarga—dies during the adventure.
