Summary

The Lawnmower Man (often just called Lawnmower Man) drops you into a side‑scrolling shooter that feels like a love‑letter to classics such as Contra and Metal Slug. You can pick up either Dr. Lawrence Angelo or Carla Parkette and spend the run gathering weapon upgrades and glowing data discs that litter the levels.

When you’ve hoarded enough discs, they fuse into a Virtual Suit that shields you from a single hit, turning the frantic run into a brief moment of invincibility. Between the scrolling stages the game throws in true‑3D connectors ripped straight from the film’s CG sequences, giving the action a brief but striking shift in perspective.

Those connectors split into four distinct VR‑style stages: Virtual World, a first‑person obstacle‑dodge gauntlet; Cyber War, which adds timed shooting bursts; Cyber Run, a third‑person sprint with occasional fire; and Cyber Tube, a high‑speed tunnel packed with enemies. Each segment feels like a different arcade cabinet, keeping the gameplay fresh from start to finish.

Storyline

The Game Boy title Lawnmower Man follows the plot of the 1992 film. Dr. Lawrence Angelo works for Virtual Space Industries on a secret Project 5 that uses psychotropic drugs and virtual‑reality training to boost primate intelligence. When a chimpanzee escapes, Angelo is forced to find a human subject and chooses Jobe Smith, a simple‑minded odd‑job worker who makes a living mowing lawns. The first experiments quickly raise Jobe’s IQ, but an accident halts the program. The covert agency known as The Shop then re‑introduces the drugs, accelerating the treatment; Jobe develops telekinetic powers, seeks revenge on those who abused him, and plots to take control of computers worldwide.
