Summary

Kung‑Fu Master on the Game Boy surprised me with its twist on the classic arcade hit. Rather than re‑using the original plot, this handheld sequel jumps forward, featuring a brand‑new hero called Bruce Leap in the western releases, while Japanese fans see the same name unchanged. The gameplay stays true to the side‑scrolling beat ’em‑up roots – you still punch, kick and even jump or crouch with the d‑pad, battling the familiar roster of grippers, knife‑throwers and the boss gauntlet of the Devil’s Temple. What felt fresh was the completely different story environment, turning the portable version into its own adventure while preserving the rhythm that made the 1984 arcade version legendary. It’s a neat reminder of how early developers experimented with sequels on limited hardware.

Storyline

In the Game Boy version of Kung‑Fu Master, the player steps into the shoes of Thomas, a disciplined kung fu master clad in a sleeveless white keikogi. A cryptic letter informs him that his beloved Sylvia has been seized and taken to the Devil’s Temple, where five sons of the Devil await. Determined, Thomas battles his way up the pagoda’s five floors, confronting hordes of thugs and a distinct end‑of‑level guardian on each level, culminating in a showdown with the crime boss known only as Mr. X. The structure mirrors the classic “Game of Death” format, with each floor serving as a separate arena. By contrast, the Game Boy cartridge also includes an alternate storyline that swaps Thomas for a new hero named Bruce Leap, completely changing the plot and setting.
