Summary
Kaiju‑ō Godzilla (often referred to simply as King of the Monsters, Godzilla) is a Japan‑only Game Boy side‑scroller that drops you into Godzilla’s endless rampage across five distinct stages. As the only playable character you can punch, kick, tail‑whip, and fire the iconic atomic breath upward, downward or straight—a move that siphons health, while simply pausing restores a little life. The background isn’t just scenery; smashing certain buildings can instantly refill your gauge, a handy trick when you’re being swarmed by warships, jets and tanks that barely dent the monster anyway.
Every level ends with a memorable boss and the title packs in almost every creature from the franchise up to 1993, from the classic King Ghidorah to Biollante, Mothra, Hedorah and even a Mechagodzilla army. I especially loved seeing the sheer variety, knowing each battle requires a different pattern of bites, tail swipes or breath blasts.
There’s no save feature, but you get three continues after a KO, forcing you to master the rhythm of relentless forward motion and occasional strategic pauses.
Storyline
Kaiju-Ō Godzilla drops players into a chaotic Japan overrun by hundreds of monsters. As the nuclear titan, you must bulldoze through the creature hordes while human military forces throw tanks and jets in an attempt to halt your rampage.
Each stage pits Godzilla against a relentless stream of foes, from giant reptiles to bizarre demons, demanding constant movement and timing. The human machines act as obstacles, but the real challenge comes from the sheer number of monsters crowding the screen.
The climax arrives when Godzilla confronts Super MechaGodzilla in a final showdown. After a fierce battle, Godzilla emerges victorious, securing his title as the King of the Monsters.
