Summary
Judge Dredd on the Game Boy manages to squeeze the gritty, run‑and‑gun feel of its console siblings into a tiny handheld screen. The developers lifted seven of the twelve stages straight from the movie by digitizing the actual set pieces, while the remaining five draw on the comic’s bleak cityscapes, giving the portable version a surprisingly cinematic backdrop. Players still face the classic moral fork‑off – pull the trigger or cuff the crook – as they blast through Mega‑City One, a post‑nuclear prison, and the ruined ruins before confronting the rogue Judge Rico Dredd. Electronic Gaming Monthly praised the faithful level‑by‑level translation, noting only the sound suffered in the shift to monochrome, whereas GamePro called the controls “so‑so” but ultimately gave it a guilty‑pleasure verdict. Scores were mixed: a middling 5.6/10 from EGM and a low‑average spread from Famitsu, reflecting the game’s charm tempered by handheld limitations.
Storyline
In the 22nd century humanity is confined to sprawling urban megacities. Traditional police and legal systems have been abolished, leaving the Judges as the sole authority. Judge Dredd, the toughest of them, is the protagonist of the Game Boy title Judge Dredd. He is tasked with hunting down the rogue Judge Rico and confronting the city’s most dangerous criminals.
After a series of gritty confrontations, Dredd finally corners Rico and defeats him. The climax pits him against the supernatural Dark Judges, whose defeat saves Mega‑City from total collapse. With the Dark Judges vanquished, Mega‑City is rescued and order is restored.
