Summary

Joe & Mac on the Game Boy manages to squeeze the classic arcade’s charm into a tiny screen. Released in April 1993 for North America and the United Kingdom, the version was handled by Motivetime and published by Data East. I was impressed by the clean sprites and fluid animation—Nintendo Power even said the graphics rival the NES and SNES ports. The trade‑off, however, was a pronounced background blur when the cavemen walked, which made spotting enemies a hassle, and the collision detection was hit‑or‑miss, a point noted by Total!. Unlike the arcade, the handheld strips away the level‑selection gimmick and forces a single, linear progression with a boss that echoes the original.

Storyline

Joe & Mac on Game Boy follows the green‑haired Joe and his blue‑haired partner Mac, two cavemen battling through a string of prehistoric stages. They arm themselves with boomerangs, bones, fire, flints, electricity, stone wheels and clubs as they hunt down a rival tribe. The core goal is to rescue a group of women who have been kidnapped by that rival clan. Each level tests the duo’s skill with the oddball weapons and platforming hazards.
The Japanese version opens with a brief scene: a pair of cavemen storm into a hut and emerge dragging cavewomen by their hair, setting the tone for the rescue mission that follows.
