Summary
Jikuu Senki Mu (often just called Mu) feels like a hidden gem of the Game Boy era, thanks to its surprisingly deep character‑making and party mechanics. At the start you can name your hero in hiragana or katakana (up to four characters) and even skip the input to get the default name “Chokki,” then piece together a face from a handful of preset parts – each combination subtly tweaks the protagonist’s base stats in what the manual calls the “Fukuwarai System.”
The game lets you recruit up to twenty allies, but only four can sit in a single party; a fifth recruit spawns a brand‑new party, allowing you to juggle five distinct groups. Each character belongs to a specific class, and many can undergo a class‑change via items, events, or baptism, dramatically boosting their parameters. The shared level system means every party member advances together, keeping the whole roster relevant.
Combat is straightforward, with only weapons and armor to equip, and each party can hold eight items, with a storage hub for swapping gear between groups. The roster includes a knight‑turned holy knight, a sorcerer with top‑tier MP, a thief with sky‑high speed, and even a dog and a cat that wield elemental magic – a quirky touch that underscores the game’s charm.
Storyline
Jikuu Senki Mu (often just called Mu) opens on the continent once ruled by the kingdom of Prina. After King Luls II abruptly declared the old Niel faith a heresy and installed the Max faith, the queen vanished, the newborn heir was kidnapped, and monsters began to roam the land, blamed on the exiled Niel followers. Sixteen years later the monsters breach Prina Castle, the gravely wounded king escapes to the remote village of Eribe, and the story follows a 16‑year‑old hero who is revealed to be the missing son of Luls II, raised as the child of the village’s warrior Karl.
The world is divided into towns dominated by shape‑shifting monsters; defeating each town’s boss displays a “people liberated” message, unlocks facilities and sometimes adds new party members. Dungeon bosses similarly free entire regions on the world map, turning them into travel points. Some bosses serve as both town and area leaders, so a single victory clears both.
As the hero journeys, a colorful cast joins the party: Tarcus the knight who once guarded the castle with his father Sodato, Haman the apprentice of the wizard Hall, the minstrel Rolde who lost his silver harp, the thief Rack rescued from a Craisworm, the gypsy Manon with her Guiding Staff, the young fortune‑teller Hilda, the mason Yosef, the priest Mihail from the Max‑faith sanctuary, the warrior Flare rescued from prison, and many others including a dog, a cat, and rival townsfolk. Together they uncover that the Max faith itself is manipulating the monsters, leading to a final solo showdown against the true mastermind.
