Summary

The Game Boy title Hugo is essentially a European facelift of the 1991 platformer Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle II. By swapping out the original Disney and Looney Tunes heroes for Hugo’s mischievous cast, Kemco gave the game a fresh, region‑specific personality without touching its core design. Players still navigate the same tightly‑designed levels, dodging enemies and hunting keys, but the visual vibe now mirrors the quirky, slap‑stick world of the Hugo franchise.

Although the gameplay mirrors its predecessor, this 1996 European release is notable for being the only time the Hugo branding appeared on a Nintendo handheld. It illustrates how 90s developers could cheaply re‑skin popular titles for different markets, extending a game’s lifespan with minimal development effort.

Storyline

Hugo, the lovable troll from the Game Boy platformer, wakes up to a dire surprise: his wife Hugolina has been snatched by the sinister Horned King. The king lured her to his stronghold, the looming Castle Arbarus, and vanished with her behind its dark walls. Determined to save her, Hugo straps on his trusty slingshot and sets out on a perilous trek across forests, swamps, and crumbling ruins.
Along the way he battles bizarre monsters and avoids deadly traps, all while inching closer to the castle’s iron gates. In the final confrontation he must defeat the Horned King and free Hugolina.
