Summary

Hugo 2 landed on the original Game Boy in 1997, bringing the quirky Danish mascot to a handheld with a stripped‑down visual style. The graphics are simpler than the PC original, but the core idea stays the same: a series of bite‑size challenges that test reflexes and wits.

Each level is a quick‑time or puzzle mini‑game, ranging from timed button presses to simple guessing tasks. The action is presented in flat 2D or a shallow 2.5D perspective, and Hugo darts around using whatever transport he can find – from scooters to hover‑craft – all controlled with the Game Boy’s directional pad and buttons.

Two years later the same package was refreshed for the Game Boy Color under the name Hugo 2½, adding a splash of colour while keeping the same fast‑paced, repeat‑play formula that made the original a quirky handheld curiosity.

Storyline

In Hugo 2 for the Game Boy, the troll hero Hugo faces his familiar nemesis, the wicked witch Scylla (known as Afskylia in the original Danish version). Scylla kidnaps Hugo’s wife Hugoline and their three young children—Rit, Rat and Rut—claiming they are needed for a magical beauty treatment. From her crystal ball she watches Hugo’s progress, casting spells and laying traps along the perilous paths that lead to her skull‑cave lairs. Hugo must battle through these hazards, rescue his family, and ultimately confront Scylla in her hideout. Defeating the witch brings peace back to the Troll Forest, though some versions hint at alternate endings that may omit her final showdown.
