Summary

Heiankyo Alien, released in Japan as a 1979 arcade hit and known in the West as Digger, was born in a university lab. A handful of University of Tokyo students in the Theoretical Science Group turned a quirky trap‑laying concept into a Go‑board‑styled city under siege by extraterrestrials, making it one of the first maze‑chase games—years before Pac‑Man even hit the cabinets. You play a Heian‑period police officer, the kebiishi, sprinting through a grid‑like capital and digging holes of variable size by holding the fire button. The trick is to time the dig so an alien falls in, then quickly refill the pit before the creature claws its way out; each successful trap scores points, and the faster you seal the hole, the higher the reward. The game ramps up across nine increasingly crowded levels, offers a two‑player mode where you can either take turns or share the screen, and even lets you enter your name with a quirky street‑walk cursor. Meldac’s 1990 Game Boy port added a fresh alien type but stripped away much of the original’s charm, earning a lukewarm legacy; critics later called the handheld version boring and lacking replay value, a stark contrast to the arcade’s commercial success in Japan.

Storyline

Heiankyo Alien drops you into the Heian‑period capital of Heian‑kyō, where an alien invasion threatens the ancient streets. You play as a kebiishi, a traditional police officer, tasked with defending the city. The core mechanic involves digging holes in the pavement, coaxing the extraterrestrials into them, and then quickly filling the pits to trap the invaders. Each successful capture secures a portion of the city and pushes the alien menace back. The game blends a historical setting with quirky sci‑fi action, making every level a race against time.
