Summary
Godzilla‑kun on the Game Boy feels like a quirky maze‑puzzle wrapped in a 2‑D side‑scroller. You guide Godzilla through cramped rooms, using his single punch to shove boulders against walls and then smash them again; clearing every stone triggers an arrow panel that opens a new direction on the overworld map.
Three power‑ups spice the grind: an hourglass freezes all foes for a moment, a heart restores health, and a lightning bolt wipes the screen of enemies—though the dreaded King Ghidorah remains untouched in the Western version.
The roster reads like a monster‑movie bingo card. Baragon lumbers slowly, Mechagodzilla mirrors Godzilla’s pace, Hedorah can only be crushed or stunned, Anguirus and Rodan flip from allies to rivals, and Ghidorah swoops in after a couple of minutes, invincible in the international release. The Japanese edition speeds up Godzilla, lets you punch Hedorah, actually defeats Ghidorah, and even adds a two‑player mode with altered sprites.
Progress is saved via passwords—four characters for map position, eighteen for revealed routes—so you never lose your place, though extra lives and scores stay out of the save data.
Storyline
In the Game Boy title Godzilla‑kun (often just called Godzilla‑kun), a host of classic monsters have taken Godzilla’s loved ones hostage. One group has snatched his son Minilla and hidden him deep within the Labyrinth of Matrix, while another faction has captured his girlfriend Bijira. Godzilla must battle the monsters’ attacks, solve a series of puzzles, and navigate a sprawling maze to free them. He isn’t alone, however—family members appear to lend a hand as he makes his way through the labyrinthine levels. The game blends action and brain‑teasing challenges as the hero works to rescue both Minilla and Bijira.
