Summary

God Medicine: Fantasy Sekai no Tanjou is a little‑known fantasy RPG for the original Game Boy, released only in Japan. Its cartridge feels like a relic from the early ’90s, and the lack of a Western launch makes it a prized find for collectors. The game invites you to control a trio of adventurers who level up through turn‑based battles, equipping a variety of weapons and armor.

Spells and the unique “Maphu” system add extra depth; you gather Maphu gems, embed them in special weapons, and unleash attacks whose effects vary by character. Some of those attacks must be charged beforehand, and once charged the energy holds over to the next fight. You can save your progress at any time outside of combat, a generous feature for a handheld RPG of its era.

An updated edition titled God Medicine Fukkokuban appeared through Nintendo Power in 1998, adding Super Game Boy border support, a bestiary for every monster, and extra story tidbits. Those enhancements breathe new life into an already charming title, proving the game still has plenty to offer curious retro players.

Storyline

When the mysterious destruction of the studio behind the upcoming RPG "Phantom" leaves fans Noah, Ken, and Miki disillusioned, the trio wanders aimlessly until they discover a ramshackle hut harboring a great demon locked in combat with three armored warriors. The warriors fall, and the demon bursts through a portal, but before vanishing it transfers its victims' souls and powers to the three gamers. Empowered, Noah, Ken, and Miki are thrust into the world of Phantom itself, tasked with rescuing its collapsing reality. At the same time, they must keep the demon from crossing back into the real world and wreaking havoc. This meta‑adventure forms the core plot of God Medicine: Fantasy Sekai no Tanjou, often referred to simply as "Phantom."
