Summary
Ghostbusters II on the Game Boy is a top‑view action retool of HAL Laboratory’s New Ghostbusters II for the NES, repackaged for the handheld. At the start you pick two out of the four iconic busters—Venkman, Stantz, Spengler or Zeddemore—the first you control with a proton pack, the second follows carrying a ghost trap.
The goal of each of the five stages is to stun a set number of specters before the timer runs out, then toss a trap onto the stunned foe. Movement is limited to the four cardinal directions and a second button handles trapping. Randomly, the remaining two busters or even accountant Louis wander onto the screen, granting power‑ups like vacuum guns, instant traps or brief invulnerability, and sometimes swapping places with your active character.
Each level ends with a boss, and while the Game Boy version lacks multiplayer, it captured the movie’s frantic feel. Famitsu gave the Japanese release a modest 25 / 40 score.
Storyline
Ghostbusters II (Game Boy) is loosely based on the movie of the same name. The game drops the team into a New York City where the evil spirit Virgo the Carpathian appears.
Virgo kidnaps Diana’s baby, setting the Ghostbusters on a rescue mission. Egon, Ray, Peter, and Winston must navigate a series of eerie settings to get the child back.
The chase takes them through courtrooms, dank sewers, cramped apartments, the underground tunnels, and even an art museum, each area offering its own challenges as they pursue Virgo.
