Summary

Gauntlet II on the Game Boy translates the classic arcade dungeon crawl into a portable experience, letting up to four players roam the same maze together. The handheld version lifts the original’s class‑lock, so friends can pick identical heroes and still be told apart by their colored palettes.

Beyond the familiar top‑down action, the port adds quirky twists: levels can rotate in 90‑degree steps, a roaming "It" tags a player and pulls enemies toward them, and special pickups let shots ricochet off walls. Players also contend with acid puddles, a multi‑square dragon that needs several hits, invisible walls, magic walls that spawn monsters or loot, stun tiles, and deceptive fake exits. Secret rooms reward those who find the true exit first with food, potions and power‑ups.

During development Atari ran contests for fan‑submitted levels and hidden‑room discoveries, offering cash‑bond prizes. Critics in Germany’s Play Time praised the Game Boy’s 8‑directional scrolling, faithful graphics and nostalgic sound effects, while noting that some sprites were hard to read and the theme music felt technically weak.
