Summary

Fortified Zone (sometimes just called the Game Boy shooter) lets you jump between a male mercenary, Masato, and a female teammate, Mizuki. Masato handles every special weapon—from flamethrowers to rocket launchers—while Mizuki covers the platforming gaps with her jump ability. The constant trade‑off feels like a built‑in tag‑team mechanic.

The four sprawling stages—Field, Jungle, Caves and Complex—play as top‑down arenas packed with ammo crates and power‑ups. Each area ends with a distinct boss, such as a cannon installation, a dragon or a massive bulldozer, forcing you to swap characters strategically. Pick‑ups range from medical packs to chain‑guns, keeping the action fresh.

Critics noted the game’s tight, classic shoot‑‘em‑up vibe but also its brevity; Super Gamer gave it a modest 70% rating. Still, the ability to switch offense and defense on the fly gives Fortified Zone a memorable twist for any retro handheld fan.

Storyline

Fortified Zone puts players in the shoes of two mercenaries, Masato Kanzaki and Mizuki Makimura, as they breach a heavily guarded stronghold.

Inside the fortified zone they battle rival mercenaries, disciplined soldiers, hostile robots and even strange monsters, pushing ever deeper toward the core.

Their ultimate goal is to reach and destroy the central complex that powers the entire installation.
