Summary

Faceball 2000 drops you into a flat‑shaded, first‑person maze where every enemy is a simple geometric shape wearing a grin. You pilot a H.A.P.P.Y.F.A.C.E. – a holographically assisted avatar – and navigate corridors that scroll smoothly as you turn, a nod to the classic Wayout engine. In single‑player mode there are 70 mazes to explore, each ending with a hidden exit that tests your sense of direction. The multiplayer arena swaps the exit for fast‑paced combat: up to four Game Boys can link via the Four Player Adapter, each player represented by a colored Pac‑Man‑style smiley and firing tiny spherical bullets. Although early Nintendo Power promos hinted at a 16‑player “chain” mode, Nintendo never released the required adapter, leaving the feature dormant in the original cartridge. In 2024 a hobbyist finally built a functional 16‑player adapter and patched the ROM, also adding Super Game Boy and Game Boy Color support under the moniker “Faceball 2000 DX.” The result is a quirky, retro shooter that feels both nostalgic and oddly ahead of its handheld era.
