Summary

The Game Boy version of F‑1 Race feels like a hidden gem from Nintendo’s R&D1 team. I was surprised to find that, unlike its NES predecessor, the handheld title lets you boost temporarily simply by holding up on the D‑pad, while powersliding is achieved by keeping left or right pressed through a tight corner. The tracks are longer and span several countries, giving each race a fresh feel. Multiplayer gets a serious upgrade too – the Four Player Adapter lets four friends race side‑by‑side, a rare treat for a portable in the early ’90s. Collisions are forgiving; instead of wrecking your car, a hit just makes you spin out, keeping the action flowing. At the end of each circuit, a parade of Nintendo icons – Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, Link, Samus, Pit and Donkey Kong – pops up, a playful nod that ties the whole experience together.
