Summary

Dragon's Lair: The Legend feels like a Game Boy re‑skin of the ZX Spectrum coaster that turned the frantic amusement‑park ride into a medieval quest. Instead of enemies, Dirk the Daring merely scours eleven themed regions, screen‑by‑screen, to snag all 194 Life‑Stone fragments and finally free Princess Daphne.

Each area is a bit wider than the tiny GB viewport, scrolling as Dirk walks or jumps over moving platforms such as bumper cars, flying hats, and roller‑coaster carts. The A or B button lets you jump, and the US/JP versions punish a two‑thirds‑screen fall with instant death—unless you grab a stone or land on a platform mid‑fall, a quirk the European edition skips entirely.

You start with ten lives, but the screen shows none of them; the count appears only after a death. Europe rewards an extra life every 42 stones, while North America offers none. Holding the jump button creates an “infinite‑jump” trick in the US/JP releases, whereas the EU version requires rapid taps.

The title earned scathing North American reviews (a 17/40 from EGM) yet scored near‑perfect marks in Europe, underscoring how dramatically the regional tweaks shape its notorious difficulty.

Storyline

In Dragon's Lair: The Legend, Dirk the Daring cradles the maid’s limp, lifeless body after a brutal clash, learning that a traitor revealed the location of the mythical Life Stone to the evil Mordroc. The villain’s barbaric army ambushed Princess Daphne’s caravan, slaughtering the escort and taking the princess captive while the Life Stone was still in their possession.

Before the attack, the maid used her limited sorcery to shatter the Life Stone into hundreds of fragments, scattering them across the land. With the princess held in Mordroc’s clutches, Dirk knows the only hope lies in re‑assembling the shattered stone.

The game follows Dirk’s quest to locate every piece, restore the Life Stone’s power, and rescue Princess Daphne before Mordroc can claim eternal life.
